Overview
Hotels, bus stops, and the neighboring Ichibata railway are all within walking distance of Izumoshi Station's North Exit. An overnight stay here keeps you close to trains after a JR arrival or to buses before a flight from Izumo Airport. It isn't the district around Izumo Taisha.
Around the stations
The JR station has north and south exits. Most visitors transferring to buses or the Ichibata railway will need the north side. Dentetsu Izumoshi Station is about three minutes east on foot, so check which railway appears on your ticket before following signs to a platform.
Atnes Izumo, the shopping complex beside the JR station, provides regional souvenirs and tourist information. Food and convenience shopping are also available at the station. Twin Leaves Hotel Izumo is beside the north forecourt, about one minute from the JR exit.
Stations and access
Yakumo limited express trains run from Izumoshi Station to Matsue and Okayama Station, where passengers can change for the Shinkansen.
Izumo Taisha requires a separate trip. Buses leave from the JR station, while Ichibata trains depart from Dentetsu Izumoshi. The train journey usually requires a change at Kawato for Izumotaisha-mae, followed by a walk along Shinmon-dori toward the shrine.
Direct airport buses leave from the JR North Exit. The journey to Izumo Airport takes about 30 minutes, although traffic can affect the timing.
Where it fits in a trip
Keep arrival plans and sightseeing plans separate. You can leave luggage at a station-area hotel before heading to the shrine district, where soba restaurants and shops provide stops before or after a visit. Inasa Beach is farther on, near the shrine rather than the JR station.
If most of your time will be spent around Taisha, consider staying in that district. The station area is the better fit when flights, JR departures, or trips to Matsue set the schedule.
