Overview
For local trains toward Izumo Taisha and Matsue, follow the Ichibata signs to this station. It is separate from JR, about three minutes east of the JR North Exit in Izumoshi Station Area. The similar names can be confusing, so follow the Ichibata signs when changing from JR.
Lines and connections
The Kita-Matsue Line runs from here toward Kawato and Matsue Shinjiko-Onsen. Most trips to the shrine require a change at Kawato for a Taisha Line train to Izumotaisha-mae, so check the destination and connection before boarding.
Izumo Taisha is about a ten-minute walk from Izumotaisha-mae along the shrine approach. Shinmon-dori has shops and soba restaurants, giving you places to pause on the way.
Trains toward Matsue follow the north side of Lake Shinji and arrive at Matsue Shinjiko-Onsen, not JR Matsue Station. Use neighboring JR Izumoshi Station when you need JR services or the Yakumo limited express to Okayama.
Airport access
There is no train to Izumo Airport. Direct airport buses leave from the JR North Exit and take about 30 minutes depending on traffic. If you're connecting from an Ichibata train, allow extra time for the walk and the wait for the bus.
Station area
Twin Leaves Hotel Izumo is beside the station, and its east entrance is reached from this side. Around the JR station, shops sell regional souvenirs and food for the journey.
The two railways have separate gates. When arranging a meeting or hotel arrival, specify whether you mean JR Izumoshi or Dentetsu Izumoshi.
Good to know
Tickets are sold by station staff and from the machines. If you're returning from the shrine for a JR departure, allow for the Kawato connection and the walk between stations, not only the scheduled time aboard the trains.
