Overview
Streetcars run through the heart of Hiroshima's downtown shopping and restaurant district. Hiroshima-Hatchobori covers the blocks around Hatchobori Station, between Hiroshima Station to the east and the Peace Memorial Park side of central Hiroshima to the west.
Department stores, Okonomimura, and busy evening streets are close to the hotels here. The Shinkansen isn't nearby, but direct streetcars run to Hiroshima Station.
Downtown character
Kinza-gai and the department stores around the Hatchobori intersection form one of central Hiroshima's main shopping clusters. A short walk away, Okonomimura brings 23 Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki restaurants under one roof. Shintenchi and Nagarekawa add more evening dining and nightlife.
Mercure Tokyu Stay Hiroshima is about two minutes on foot from the streetcar stop. Guests can head straight out for dinner or start a sightseeing day without first returning to the JR station.
Stations and access
Hatchobori Station is where Hiroden's Main Line meets the Hakushima Line. Routes 1, 2, and 6 run directly to Hiroshima Station, while westbound services continue through Kamiyacho toward stops for the Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Park.
Route 9 turns north toward Hakushima and stops at Shukkeien-mae, the closest streetcar stop for Shukkeien. Route numbers matter. Check both the number and destination before boarding, especially when services share platforms.
Where it fits in a trip
Most shopping and dinner plans can begin on foot, with streetcars covering the major central sights. Hatchobori also keeps restaurants close after a day at Peace Memorial Park or Hiroshima Castle.
For early Shinkansen departures, JR day trips, or luggage-heavy arrivals, Hiroshima Station Area is simpler. Its hotels are closer to long-distance trains and airport buses, although reaching downtown nightlife requires local transport.
Good to know
Hatchobori Station is a street-level tram stop, not a JR station. Several services use the Main Line platforms, so check the route number as well as the destination.
The airport limousine bus doesn't stop at Hatchobori. Use Hiroshima Bus Center or Hiroshima Station, then complete the journey by local transport.
