Overview
A direct Romancecar from Shinjuku Station brings you into a hot-spring town where shops gather near the railway and traditional inns extend into the lower valley.
Staying near Hakone-Yumoto Station simplifies the first and last stages of a trip from Tokyo. Lake Ashi and Owakudani lie farther into Hakone and require another train or bus, so this district saves time at arrival and departure rather than at the main mountain sights.
What the area is known for
Hot springs define the town. Long-established inns share the area with day-use baths, so you don't need to stay overnight to bathe. Hakone Yuryo, for example, is about three minutes away by free shuttle.
Around 70 shops line the streets near the railway, combining restaurants and cafes with wooden marquetry, hot-spring buns, and local souvenirs. The center is compact. Its shopping streets are easy to browse before check-in or while waiting for a return train.
Stations and access
Direct Romancecar trains take about 90 minutes from Shinjuku. If you're arriving by Tokaido Shinkansen, change at Odawara Station and continue by local train.
From Hakone-Yumoto, the Hakone Tozan Train climbs to Gora in about 40 minutes. A cable car continues toward Sounzan and the ropeway, while buses provide a more direct route to Lake Ashi and the Sengokuhara or Togendai side of Hakone.
The station concourse has ticket counters, tourist information, temporary baggage storage, and a luggage delivery desk. Bags can be sent to many accommodations around Hakone and returned to Hakone-Yumoto after checkout. This is especially helpful when your room isn't ready or another mountain transfer still lies ahead.
Where it fits in a trip
First and last nights are easiest here. You can arrive directly from Shinjuku, settle into an onsen stay, and keep the return journey short. On a day trip, you can stop for a meal, shopping, or a bath before returning to Tokyo.
Staying farther up the mountain shortens the journey to Gora's museums, the ropeway, or Lake Ashi. Hakone-Yumoto instead keeps the return to Odawara and Shinjuku shorter.
Good to know
A Hakone-Yumoto address doesn't always mean a short walk from the platforms. Inns continue up the valley, and a paid ryokan shuttle departs from the front rotary for participating accommodations. Check your hotel's directions before setting out with luggage.
The Hakone Freepass covers participating local transport within its designated area, but the Romancecar requires a separate limited-express ticket. Mountain services can change because of weather or maintenance, so check the live status before planning a day that depends on close connections.
