Overview
The tracks divide Fukui Station Area into two distinct sides. The West Exit faces Dinosaur Plaza, hotels, shops, and the route into central Fukui. The East Exit serves airport and regional buses and provides access to Echizen Railway.
Everything is close together. Fukui Station handles Hokuriku Shinkansen and regional rail services, so this is the simplest part of the city for arriving by train, catching an early departure, or staying with luggage.
What the area is known for
The station frontage includes transport and visitor facilities. Dinosaur monuments appear on both sides of the tracks, while the West Exit opens onto Happiring and FUKUMACHI BLOCK. Inside the latter, MINIE food hall has casual dining and local drinks.
Tourist information is available on both sides of the station. Services include luggage storage, maps, rain-gear rental, and bicycle hire, though opening hours and availability vary.
Main places
Courtyard by Marriott Fukui occupies the upper floors of FUKUMACHI BLOCK, two minutes from the West Exit. The building also has dining and commercial spaces, so guests have alternatives to the hotel's restaurants.
Fukui Castle's stone walls and moat are about five minutes from the station. Yokokan Garden is about ten minutes away, extending a short central walk beyond the immediate hotel and shopping blocks.
Stations and access
The main station serves Hokuriku Shinkansen and Hapi-Line trains. Echizen Railway runs from a separate station on the east side, with routes toward Eiheiji-guchi, Katsuyama, Awara, and Mikuni. Fukui Railway trams stop beside the West Exit for local trips through the city and south toward Sabae and Takefu.
Direct Shinkansen trains connect Fukui with Kanazawa and Tokyo. Trips from Osaka, Kyoto, and Nagoya require a change at Tsuruga, while buses from the East Exit serve Komatsu Airport and several regional destinations.
Where it fits in a trip
Stay here when the schedule depends on trains, airport buses, or regional day trips. Hotels are close to the rail platforms and bus stops, while the castle ruins and garden provide enough nearby sightseeing for a shorter stay.
The tradeoff is distance from the wider region's major sights. Eiheiji, the Dinosaur Museum, and most mountain or coastal attractions require a separate ride and enough time for the return journey.
Good to know
Komatsu Airport buses leave from the East Exit, while most large hotels and commercial buildings are on the West Exit side. Allow time to cross the station when carrying luggage. JR, Hapi-Line, Echizen Railway, and Fukui Railway services are close together, but they don't all use the same platforms or gates.
