Overview
On Karasuma-dori, Hotel Monterey Kyoto is a three-minute walk from Karasuma Oike Station, where Kyoto's two subway lines meet. The Karasuma Line runs north and south, while the Tozai Line crosses the city from east to west. Both lines are available from the same station, which helps when your plans cover several parts of Kyoto.

Rooms
All guest rooms are non-smoking. Standard Twins measure 22 square meters and have two 120-centimeter-wide beds. Family Rooms provide substantially more space at 38 to 50 square meters, with options for up to four guests. Layouts and extra-bed arrangements vary, so families should compare the actual sleeping setup as well as the floor area.
Single, double, and triple categories are also available, along with a women-only floor on the 12th floor. Rooms have Simmons mattresses, cotton pajamas, and tea from Kyoto's Gion Tsujiri. Wi-Fi and a desk are provided if you need to catch up on work between outings.
Facilities
Spa Trinite occupies the 13th floor, with natural hot spring baths and a lounge overlooking the city and surrounding mountains. Overnight guests can use the baths and lounge without an additional admission charge, while treatments cost extra. Morning and afternoon-to-evening sessions allow time for a soak before breakfast or after sightseeing.
Bring your room key and towels from your room. The spa has scheduled closure days, so check your dates if bathing is central to your stay. Tattoos aren't permitted, and children under three or still wearing diapers can't enter. These restrictions matter for tattooed travelers and families with very young children.
Dining
Breakfast is a Japanese and Western buffet served from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., with last orders at 9:30 a.m. It suits a leisurely morning in Kyoto better than a departure before seven.
Zuientei serves Japanese food on the second floor. Downstairs, The Library is a cafe-bar with an antique mantelpiece and bar counter, styled after a British country-house library. It's a convenient place for coffee or a drink without going back out. For a broader choice of meals, the shopping and restaurant streets around Shijo are to the south.
Location and transport
Use Exit 6 at Karasuma Oike Station for the three-minute walk to the hotel. Kyoto Station is three stops away on the Karasuma Line, so travelers arriving by Shinkansen can continue by subway, followed by the short street walk.
The Tozai Line is handy for sightseeing across the city. Nijojo-mae, the station for Nijo Castle, is the next stop west, while trains east serve Higashiyama. For Hankyu services, walk south to Karasuma Station, whose Exit 22 is about five minutes from the hotel. Shijo Station on the subway is reached through the same exit.
Airport access
From Kansai International Airport, take the JR Haruka limited express to Kyoto Station, then change to the Karasuma subway line for Karasuma Oike. The final stretch is on foot. Allow time for the transfer between the JR and subway platforms when traveling with luggage, as the airport train doesn't reach the hotel's nearest station.
Why stay here
Cross-city subway connections make it easier to explore Kyoto in several directions, while the substantial hot spring facility offers a welcome place to return afterward. The larger Family Rooms are also worth considering when a standard twin won't accommodate everyone comfortably.
Nearby, the Kyoto International Manga Museum occupies a former elementary school and offers a change from temple visits. Shijo's department stores and the food shops of Nishiki Market offer plenty to explore on a day spent downtown.
Good to know
The hotel is scheduled to close from January 3 through January 31, 2027, for air-conditioning upgrades, with reopening planned for February 1. Check the dates carefully before arranging a winter stay.
