Tsuruga Station

Overview

At Tsuruga Station, travelers change between the Hokuriku Shinkansen and limited express trains serving Kansai and Nagoya. Local trains also run along the Wakasa coast and north through Fukui Prefecture. The Machinami Exit, also called the West Exit, faces the city center.

Lines and connections

Shinkansen trains run north to Fukui and Kanazawa, while direct services continue to Tokyo. Thunderbird trains connect Tsuruga with Kyoto and Osaka, and Shirasagi trains serve Maibara and Nagoya. If you're traveling from Kansai to destinations farther along the Hokuriku Shinkansen, this is where you change trains.

The transfer requires a change of floors. From the Shinkansen platforms on the third floor, pass through the transfer gates on the second floor to reach the limited express platforms on the first floor. Stairs, escalators, and elevators are available. Allow extra time with luggage.

For local journeys, Hapi-Line Fukui trains serve Takefu, Sabae, and Fukui. JR Hokuriku Line trains head south toward Maibara and Kyoto, while the Obama Line runs west to Obama and Higashi-Maizuru.

Airport access

From Komatsu Airport, take the bus to Komatsu Station and change to a Hokuriku Shinkansen train for Tsuruga. The bus journey takes about 12 minutes, so check the rail connection separately and allow for waiting time.

Station area

The Tsuruga Station Area has restaurants, the Chienamiki bookshop and cafe, and hotels around the West Exit. Hotel Granbinario Tsuruga is one minute on foot from this exit. Coin lockers are available inside the station complex.

What's nearby

Kehi Jingu Shrine is about an 18-minute walk from the station along the shopping streets. For the port's Red Brick Warehouses, take a sightseeing bus or plan on a longer walk beyond the shrine area.

Good to know

Local trains use different platforms from the limited express services, so follow the signs for your train type. When timing a departure, don't treat the walk from a station exit to your hotel as the full time needed to reach the platform.
