Overview
For a direct private-rail trip from Tokyo, Tobu-Nikko Station is the arrival point most visitors use. Limited express trains run from Asakusa, while selected through services provide journeys from Shinjuku or Ikebukuro without a change.
Sightseeing buses leave from the station for the World Heritage sites, Lake Chuzenji, and Oku-Nikko. The JR Nikko Station is only a few minutes away, and both stations share the same Nikko Station Area.
Lines and connections
Tobu-Nikko, numbered TN25, is the end of the Tobu Nikko Line. Direct limited expresses from Asakusa take around one hour and 50 minutes, although some journeys require a change at Shimo-imaichi for the final section. Selected direct services from Shinjuku and Ikebukuro take about two hours.
You'll need a limited express ticket in addition to the basic fare. Tobu's Nikko passes cover different train and bus zones, but the limited express supplement is separate, and the Shinjuku route isn't covered by the Nikko Pass.
Station area
Inside the station are a waiting room, lifts, coin lockers, shops, accessible toilets, and a tourist information center. The bus bays outside serve the World Heritage loop as well as routes toward Kirifuri, Lake Chuzenji, Senjogahara, and Yumoto Onsen.
Nikko Station Hotel Classic is about a minute away and faces the JR station. Because the two stations are so close, the same nearby hotels and local services are convenient for arrivals on either operator.
What's nearby
The road from the station climbs through central Nikko toward Shinkyo and the World Heritage district. Small food and souvenir shops line parts of the route, but the main shrine and temple complexes are farther uphill.
Sightseeing buses reach the World Heritage stops in about 15 minutes. The walk takes roughly 45 minutes, while Lake Chuzenji and the national park require a much longer bus journey.
Good to know
Tobu-Nikko and JR Nikko are separate stations despite being close together. Check whether your ticket or pass covers Tobu trains, JR services, or local buses rather than assuming one product applies to every part of the trip.
Mountain buses can be delayed by traffic, snow, and peak-season congestion. Leave extra time before a reserved limited express departure, particularly on autumn weekends.
