Overview
On Akihabara's southern edge, Iwamotocho Station serves the Toei Shinjuku Line just south of Akihabara Station. The two stations cover the same broad district but belong to different rail networks. Iwamotocho can be the easier arrival point for addresses south of the main Akihabara complex, particularly when you're already traveling on the Shinjuku Line.
The station names aren't interchangeable. Iwamotocho and Akihabara form a recognized transfer pair, but changing between them requires leaving the gates and walking to the other station. There is no shared concourse.
Lines and connections
Iwamotocho is S08 on the Toei Shinjuku Line, between Ogawamachi and Bakuro-yokoyama. Westbound trains cross central Tokyo toward Shinjuku Station, while eastbound services continue toward Motoyawata.
Akihabara Station serves the JR city lines, Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, and Tsukuba Express. When changing between those services and the Shinjuku Line, follow signs for the out-of-gate transfer. It's a walk between separately named stations, not an internal platform change.
Station area
The exits open onto the southern edge of Tokyo-Akihabara. Most of the district's electronics and pop-culture shopping is concentrated around Akihabara Station and the Electric Town side, so Akihabara is the clearer starting point when the shops are your first destination. Iwamotocho is more convenient for Shinjuku Line arrivals and addresses south of the main shopping area.
For a nearby hotel or meeting place, check the station and exit named in its directions. An Akihabara address doesn't always mean the JR station is closest.
Good to know
When arranging to meet, specify Iwamotocho Station for the Toei Shinjuku Line or give the relevant operator at Akihabara Station. That small distinction can prevent a frustrating walk between the wrong gates, especially when you're carrying luggage.
