Overview
Temple streets begin at the exits. Gion Station serves the eastern side of Hakata Old Town, where Tochoji, Shofukuji, Jotenji, and Hakata Sennen-no-Mon punctuate the modern blocks between Hakata Station and Nakasu. It is one stop from Hakata on the Airport Line, keeping major rail connections close while offering a smaller, calmer setting than the main terminal.
Within Fukuoka-Hakata, Gion suits travelers whose hotel or first stop lies among the old-town blocks rather than beside the Shinkansen concourses. The station has six numbered exits, coin lockers, and a compact layout that's quick to navigate.
Lines and connections
Gion is K10 on the Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line. Eastbound trains reach Hakata after one stop and continue to Fukuoka Airport. Westbound trains serve Nakasu-Kawabata and Tenjin before continuing toward Meinohama.
This is a subway stop, not a JR station. Shinkansen and regional JR journeys still begin at Hakata, but staying near Gion leaves those connections only one subway stop away.
Airport access
Trains run directly from Gion to Fukuoka Airport Station without a change. The subway arrives beneath the Domestic Terminal, which keeps the journey straightforward for domestic flights.
International passengers need one extra step. Fukuoka Airport's International Terminal is separate from the subway station, with a free shuttle bus connecting it to the Domestic Terminal and subway entrance. Allow time for that transfer in either direction.
Station area
The exits divide neatly by destination. Exit 1 is convenient for Tochoji and Shofukuji, while Exit 4 leads toward Jotenji and Hakata Sennen-no-Mon. Dormy Inn Hakata Gion is about one minute from Exit 3, within the small hotel cluster between Gion and the old-town streets.
Temples, offices, and local streets define the neighborhood rather than a large station complex. Hakata's shopping and long-distance transport remain close, while the western side leads toward Kushida Shrine, Kawabata, and Nakasu.
What's nearby
Tochoji is about a minute from Gion Station, and Jotenji is around five minutes away. These eastern old-town sights give Gion its clearest advantage over Hakata Station: you can leave the subway and begin exploring without first crossing the main rail district.
Kushida Shrine is about eight minutes away on foot, although it now has a closer subway option. Kushida Shrine Station on the Nanakuma Line is about two minutes from the shrine and roughly three minutes from Canal City Hakata.

Match the station to your first stop. Gion is the Airport Line choice for Tochoji, Jotenji, and hotels in eastern Hakata Old Town. Hakata handles Shinkansen and JR trains, while Kushida Shrine Station provides the shorter approach to Kushida Shrine and Canal City.
