Overview
Flights and westbound trains drive the choice here. Shinagawa Station brings together the Tokaido Shinkansen, direct Keikyu trains to Haneda Airport, and several cross-city JR lines on Tokyo's south side. Hotels line both the Takanawa and Konan sides, so an early departure needn't begin with a trip across Tokyo.
Street-level sightseeing around the station is limited. Most major Tokyo sights still require a train ride, though Yokohama and routes through southern Tokyo fit easily into the same stay.
What the area is known for
The two sides of the station feel different. Takanawa has a large hotel and leisure cluster: Shinagawa Prince Hotel is close to the exit, with Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa inside the complex. Across the tracks, Konan is more businesslike, with office towers and elevated walkways leading toward The Strings by InterContinental Tokyo.
Inside the JR gates, Ecute Shinagawa is handy for meals, train snacks, and souvenirs. Atre Shinagawa adds more dining just outside the gates.
Main places
Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa is about two minutes on foot from the Takanawa Exit. Tennozu Isle belongs to the wider Shinagawa area, but it isn't beside the station. Allow about 20 minutes on foot, or take a short bus ride to reach its waterfront paths and galleries.
Takanawa Gateway City is a separate mixed-use district just north of Shinagawa, centered on its own JR stop. It shouldn't be treated as another exit from Shinagawa Station.
Stations and access
The Tokaido Shinkansen runs west to Nagoya, Kyoto, and Shin-Osaka. JR trains handle cross-city travel and direct trips toward Yokohama, while Keikyu provides the airport connection. Its fastest trains reach Haneda Airport in about 14 minutes.
If a flight and Shinkansen journey fall on the same day, leave time to cross the station between Keikyu and the Shinkansen concourse. This isn't a same-platform transfer.
Where it fits in a trip
Travel days are where the area pays off. A nearby hotel helps before a morning flight, an early Shinkansen, or a day heading toward Yokohama. For a Tokyo-only stay centered on neighborhood walks and late evenings, Shinagawa can feel more like somewhere to leave from than somewhere to linger.
Good to know
Despite the name, Shinagawa Station is in Minato City, not Shinagawa City. The wider Shinagawa label can cover places well beyond the station, including Tennozu. Don't book by district name alone: confirm the Takanawa or Konan side, the walking route, or whether the hotel provides a shuttle.
