Overview
Just one minute from Gojo Station Exit 8, Smile Hotel Kyoto Karasumagojo occupies the Karasuma corridor between Kyoto Station and Kyoto Shijo-Karasuma. Kyoto Station and Kyoto Tower are about 12 minutes away on foot, and Higashi Honganji is a short walk south from Gojo.
The hotel keeps things modest, with compact rooms and a small set of everyday facilities. Its main advantage is location, particularly if you want to arrive through Kyoto Station without staying inside the larger station complex.
Rooms
The 108 rooms are mainly compact double and twin layouts. Other categories include bench-seat and sofa doubles, a Japanese-style twin, connecting rooms, and one larger superior double. Most published layouts measure between 11 and 14 square metres, so compare categories carefully if floor space or luggage storage matters.
Facilities
Coin laundry and a microwave come in handy on longer trips, while vending and ice machines cover simple everyday needs. There is no dedicated on-site parking, so drivers should arrange nearby paid parking before arrival.
Dining
A Japanese and Western breakfast buffet is served in the second-floor breakfast room from 7:00 to 10:00. It's a straightforward option before taking the subway or walking toward Kyoto Station.
Location and transport
Gojo is one stop north of Kyoto Station and one stop south of Shijo on the Karasuma Line. You can walk from Kyoto Station or take the subway; with heavy luggage, the short subway ride or a taxi may be more comfortable.
Farther north, Karasuma Oike Station provides a transfer to the Tozai Line. This keeps north-south trips through central Kyoto uncomplicated, with east-west subway connections available after one transfer.
Airport access
Airport arrivals run through Kyoto Station rather than a hotel-door shuttle. From Kansai International Airport or Osaka International Airport, travel first to Kyoto Station by rail or airport bus, then continue to Gojo by subway, taxi, or on foot.
Why stay here
Having Gojo Station beside the hotel, along with a walkable route from Kyoto Station, takes some of the strain out of arrival days and everyday subway trips. The tradeoff is compact rooms and limited facilities rather than Gion's atmosphere or the services of a full-scale hotel.
Higashi Honganji and Shosei-en Garden add two worthwhile cultural stops to the surrounding streets. Kyoto Tower and the station complex are also close enough to reach on foot.
Good to know
Gojo Station and Kiyomizu-Gojo Station are different stops. Gojo serves the Karasuma subway line beside the hotel, while Kiyomizu-Gojo is on the Keihan Main Line farther east. Check both the station name and line when planning your arrival.
