Overview
Kenninji is across the lane. Capella Kyoto opened in March 2026 in Miyagawa-cho, within Kyoto-Gion, beside the district's restored Kaburenjo theatre. Kengo Kuma & Associates designed the four-storey hotel as a contemporary response to Kyoto's machiya townhouses.
The setting and the hotel experience carry equal weight. The lanes of southern Higashiyama and the Kamo River are easy to reach on foot. Daily cultural activities and the spa make it easy to spend part of the afternoon at the hotel before dinner.
Rooms
Capella Kyoto has 89 rooms, including 29 suites, and every room measures at least 50 square metres. The three 50-square-metre categories differ mainly by outlook: Deluxe rooms face Miyagawa-cho, Premier Temple rooms overlook Kenninji, and Premier Theatre rooms look toward the Kaburenjo.
Junior Suites measure 58 or 61 square metres. Each of the six 71-square-metre Onsen Suites has a private natural hot-spring bath facing an inner garden. For considerably more room, the two Gion Suites measure 148 square metres, while the 206-square-metre Capella Suite has a second bedroom and separate living and dining areas.
Facilities
Auriga Spa has four treatment rooms, three private onsen rooms, wet and dry saunas, and a fitness centre. The private spa rooms are separate from the six guest rooms with their own onsen baths, which is an important distinction when choosing a category.
The Living Room serves refreshments during the day and hosts a daily cocktail hour. Hotel programming includes changing cultural activities, bicycles are available until early evening, and both the fitness centre and in-room dining operate around the clock.
Dining
SoNoMa by SingleThread is the most intimate venue, with a 12-seat counter and a 20-seat lounge bar focused on seasonal ingredients from Kyoto and California. Lanterne is the more flexible choice, serving French brasserie cooking throughout the day.
For later evenings, Yoi serves kappo dishes and cocktails. The Patisserie sells sweets, pastries, and packaged items for eating at the hotel or taking away. Between them, the venues cover a formal dinner, a relaxed all-day meal, a late drink, and pastries to take away.
Location and transport
Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Main Line is about four minutes away on foot. The line serves Fushimi Inari and other stops on Kyoto's east side, as well as Keihan routes toward Osaka. For Gion and southern Higashiyama, you'll often find walking more rewarding than taking the train.
Kyoto Station isn't on the Keihan Line. Shinkansen and other long-distance arrivals therefore require a taxi, bus, or local rail transfer for the final part of the journey.
Airport access
Kansai International Airport is about 90 minutes away by car. The hotel can arrange airport transfers on request, but this is a prearranged service rather than a scheduled shuttle.
By rail, the Haruka service runs from Kansai Airport to Kyoto Station, followed by a taxi or local transfer to Miyagawa-cho. This avoids relying entirely on road conditions, though you'll still have a final city connection to manage with luggage.
Why stay here
Capella Kyoto is for travelers who want a Gion stay with unusually large rooms, extensive dining, and onsen or spa time built into the day. It is less suitable when an itinerary depends on immediate Shinkansen access or frequent departures from Kyoto Station.
Miyagawa-cho places the hotel among Gion's traditional streets, near the Kamo River and Kenninji, with Higashiyama temple routes extending east and south. The setting rewards early walks and evenings in the district rather than a schedule built entirely around cross-city rail trips.
Good to know
Private onsen baths inside the room are limited to the six Onsen Suites. Auriga Spa's three private onsen rooms are separate facilities, so other room categories don't include their own hot-spring bath.
Complimentary transport between Capella Kyoto and Kyoto Station is reserved for guests in the Gion Suites and Capella Suite. It depends on vehicle availability and must be arranged in advance. Guests in other room categories should plan to use a taxi, bus, or local rail transfer.
