Overview
On a quiet hill above Toba Bay, Toba Hotel International Shiojitei offers a Japanese-style stay built around traditional architecture, garden views, local dining, and an extensive bath house. It's better suited to a restorative Ise-Shima visit than a minimal overnight beside the tracks.
A free shuttle makes the short trip from Toba Station in a few minutes. The Toba Station and Bayfront attractions remain close, but evenings at Shiojitei feel calmer than they do near the station streets.
Rooms
Room choices range from 34-square-meter Modern Japanese Twins to tatami rooms and premium suites. The twin rooms have Western beds, Ise Cotton and Ise Cut Paper details, and space for up to three guests. Traditional rooms use 8, 10, or 16 tatami layouts and accommodate two to six people on futons.
Two Special Japanese Rooms combine 10- and 8-tatami spaces for up to six guests, a layout that can work well for an extended family. At the top end, four 63-square-meter suites and one 84-square-meter suite add private open-air baths, terraces, and space for up to four guests.
Facilities
Bath House Tokowaka is the defining facility. It combines a large sodium-and-salt Therapy Bath with the outdoor Pearl Aurora Bath, developed with Mikimoto Pharmaceutical using pearl-derived ingredients. The Pearl Aurora Bath is distinctive, but it isn't a natural hot spring. A dry sauna, powder rooms, and Mikimoto bath products complete the bathing area.
Elsewhere, the wood deck and Lobby Lounge Sanoka overlook Toba Bay and the garden. Guests can also browse the Ise library, try selected Mie craft activities, and visit the hotel shop.
Dining
Dining Shiraishi serves Japanese meals in semi-private spaces, drawing on seasonal ingredients from the mountains and waters of Ise-Shima. The kitchen buys seafood from Toshijima market and highlights changing catches throughout the year, including abalone, spiny lobster, and yellowtail.
At Teppanyaki Kiyoishi, ingredients such as spiny lobster, Matsusaka beef, and Mikumano beef are prepared at the counter. These are leisurely destination meals rather than a quick station breakfast, so choose the meal plan and dining arrangement with the full Japanese inn experience in mind.
Location and transport
Shiojitei is just beyond Toba Station on Cape Mondo. The scheduled shuttle takes about three minutes from the station and roughly two minutes on the return trip, sparing guests the uphill approach with luggage. Parking is available in front of Shiojitei and at the neighboring main hotel building.
From Toba Station, JR and Kintetsu trains serve journeys around Ise-Shima. The bayfront also provides access to Toba Aquarium, Mikimoto Pearl Island, and municipal island ferries. This isn't an isolated resort, but the hill and garden create more separation from the station streets than the short map distance might suggest.
Airport access
From Chubu Centrair International Airport, take Meitetsu to Nagoya, change to Kintetsu at Nagoya, and continue to Toba Station before boarding the hotel shuttle. The journey requires transfers rather than offering door-to-door service, so allow time to move between the Nagoya stations and coordinate the final train with the shuttle timetable.
From Kansai Airport, travelers can pass through Osaka-Namba and continue by Kintetsu toward Toba. Chubu Centrair generally makes more sense for a wider trip centered on Nagoya and Ise-Shima, while Kansai can fit an itinerary already passing through Osaka.
Why stay here
Japanese rooms, a substantial bath house, and seasonal local dining give the stay its character. Larger tatami layouts accommodate families, couples can choose a suite with a private open-air bath, and the station shuttle removes most of the difficulty from arrival. The main tradeoff is that dining and shuttle schedules reward advance planning.
Toba Aquarium, Mikimoto Pearl Island, and the ferries are close to the station, while rail routes continue toward Ise and Shima. You can spend the day along the coast or at Ise Grand Shrine, then return for a bath and a slower Japanese dinner.
Good to know
Shiojitei is the Japanese-style building, separate from the main Toba Hotel International accommodation. The Pearl Aurora Bath isn't a natural hot spring, and the applicable bathing tax is charged. Under the published rules, guests with tattoos aren't permitted to use the shared baths.
The last scheduled shuttle from Toba Station departs in the early evening. Contact the front desk if you expect to arrive later, and check the current timetable before planning a tight connection.
