Overview
RIHGA Royal Hotel Kyoto is about a seven-minute walk west of Kyoto Station. During the day, a complimentary shuttle leaves the Hachijo Exit every 20 minutes and reaches the hotel in about five minutes. The hotel isn't connected to the station, so arrivals outside shuttle hours require a walk or taxi.
With 489 rooms, six restaurants, paid leisure facilities, and parking, it provides a full-service alternative to the area's more compact hotels. This gives families and groups more layouts to consider and reduces the need to leave the hotel for every meal or break on a multi-night visit.
Rooms
Rooms extend beyond standard twins and doubles to Japanese-style rooms, family layouts, connecting options, and suites. Standard twins and doubles start at 22 square meters, while larger twins and suites provide more space for settling in.
The Regular, Kyoto-Style, Premium, and Executive floors each have distinct designs. Train View is a named room category, so guests who want that outlook should book it specifically. Family and connecting options likewise depend on the room category booked.
Facilities
The leisure area has an indoor pool, fitness gym, jacuzzi, and warm room. Use costs extra and sessions are time-limited. The gym is restricted to adults, while the sauna is inside the men's changing area.
Drivers can use 117 parking spaces and EV charging. There's also a laundry corner on the 13th floor, which helps during longer stays but doesn't operate around the clock.
Dining
All Day Dining KAZA serves buffet meals and is the more flexible option for breakfast or an uncomplicated group meal. Five other restaurants, plus a lounge and bar, broaden the choice without requiring a trip into the city.
Top of Kyoto is the more unusual option. The French restaurant slowly rotates on the 14th floor, so views across the city change through the meal, including outlooks toward Toji and Nishi Hongwanji.
Location and transport
Kyoto Station puts Shinkansen services, Haruka airport trains, and rail day trips within easy reach. The Hachijo Exit is closest to both the shuttle pickup and the Shinkansen gates. JR lines support trips toward Osaka, Nara, and Arashiyama, while the Karasuma subway runs toward Shijo and central Kyoto.
The hotel is west of the station rather than inside it. The walk is manageable for many guests; with heavy luggage or an early departure, check the shuttle hours and plan for a taxi if the timing doesn't work.
Airport access
The Haruka limited express travels directly from Kansai International Airport to Kyoto Station in about 75 minutes. Airport limousine buses also serve Kyoto Station from Kansai and Osaka Itami airports. From there, continue to the hotel by shuttle, taxi, or on foot.
There is no hotel-door airport service. Because the shuttle stops running in the early evening, a late airport arrival may end with a walk or taxi from the station.
Why stay here
Varied room types, several restaurants, an indoor pool, and parking make a longer Kyoto visit easier to manage while keeping the Shinkansen nearby. The main compromises are the final seven-minute walk and the extra charge for leisure facilities.
The Kyoto Station Area also has sightseeing on this side of the city. Toji and Nishi Hongwanji are nearby. The aquarium and railway museum around Umekoji are convenient options for a day with children, so there is no need to cross Kyoto for every outing.
Good to know
The 17-seat shuttle leaves Kyoto Station every 20 minutes from 9:15 AM to 7:15 PM. Departures from the hotel run from 9:05 AM to 7:05 PM. Service isn't available around the clock, and traffic or weather can affect the journey.
