Overview
Late Shinkansen arrivals and early departures are easy to manage at Hotel Keihan Kyoto Ekiminami. Turn right from the Hachijo West Exit of Kyoto Station, and the hotel is about one minute away. That matters with luggage. It also leaves more flexibility for fitting a final meal around a train.
The Hachijo side is close to the station's Shinkansen and Kintetsu access, with JR services and the Karasuma subway line in the same complex. This arrangement favors rail day trips and first or final nights in Kyoto. The surroundings are functional rather than atmospheric, however, and most major sights and traditional streets aren't directly outside.
Rooms
All rooms are non-smoking and furnished with Simmons beds. Options begin with a 13 m² Single and a 17 m² Standard Double. Twin rooms range from the compact 16 m² Economy Twin to the 28 m² Moderate Twin, while the 20 m² Standard Twin can take an extra bed for a third guest. The 22 m² Family Room also sleeps up to three with a king bed and an extra bed.
The smaller categories are better suited to brief stays or days spent mostly outside. Couples wanting more floor space should compare the Moderate Twin with the double rooms, while groups of three should check the bed arrangement rather than relying on the room name alone. Every category includes Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, a safe, and a humidifying air purifier.
Facilities
Free baggage storage helps before check-in and after checkout. Coin-operated laundry, an ice machine, vending machines, a sightseeing information corner, and a designated smoking booth cover the main everyday needs.
There is no private hotel car park. Drivers can use the nearby paid municipal parking area, with discounted tickets available at reception.
Dining
M's Kitchen on the first floor serves a buffet from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., with more than 40 dishes and drinks. Choices include a make-your-own sandwich counter, udon, salads, breads, Western-style sides, and French toast with a selection of sauces. Having breakfast in the building avoids searching for a meal before a morning train. For lunch and dinner, the station area has far more choice.
Location and transport
Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen services, JR local and limited-express trains, Kintetsu services, and the Karasuma subway line all meet at Kyoto Station. From here, city sightseeing can be combined with a rail excursion or an onward journey to Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, or destinations west of Kyoto.
The Karasuma Line runs north to south through the city, while buses and taxis depart from both sides of the station building. Allow extra time inside Kyoto Station. It's a large complex, and the route from some JR or subway platforms to the Hachijo West Exit is considerably longer than the quoted one-minute walk from the exit.
The Kyoto Station Area brings together transport, shopping, and everyday conveniences. Food halls, restaurants, and shops in and around the station offset the hotel's limited dining facilities. Most temple districts and preserved streets are farther away, so sightseeing days will usually begin with a train, subway, bus, or taxi.
Airport access
The JR Haruka connects Kansai International Airport with Kyoto Station in about 75 minutes, followed by the short walk from Hachijo West Exit. Airport limousine buses also serve the Hachijo side. The bus journey takes about 85 to 90 minutes from Kansai Airport and about 50 minutes from Osaka Itami Airport, subject to road conditions. These are station-area services, not hotel shuttles.
Why stay here
A train-centered itinerary is easier when the hotel is this close to the Hachijo side. Luggage-heavy arrivals, early departures, Shinkansen journeys, and days involving several connections all benefit from the short walk. Solo travelers, couples, and groups of three can choose from several bed layouts without giving up that convenience.
The tradeoff is clear. Rooms are compact, shared facilities are modest, and historic Kyoto doesn't begin at the entrance. Anyone seeking generous room space, substantial leisure facilities, or an old-town setting should weigh those priorities against the time saved around the railway.
Good to know
Follow signs for the Hachijo West Exit rather than a generic station exit. The quoted one-minute walk begins there, not at the platform. All guest rooms are non-smoking, and smoking is permitted only in the designated booth.
