Overview
About five minutes on foot from Nagano Station's East Exit, Chateraise Hotel Nagano keeps Shinkansen arrivals and bus excursions manageable. Its larger rooms also allow families and groups to stay together without giving up proximity to the station.
Chateraise sweets are part of the stay. Guests can enjoy welcome cake after check-in and ice cream after a soak in the tenth-floor bath, which looks toward the mountains of northern Nagano. The hotel is in the Nagano Station Area, rather than among the older streets around Zenkoji Temple.
Rooms
Single rooms measure 18 square meters, while twin rooms provide 28 square meters and two 120-centimeter-wide beds. All rooms are non-smoking. For one or two guests, these are the straightforward options before considering the larger shared layouts.
Japanese-style rooms sleep four or five people on futons, depending on the category. Their bathrooms have a washing area separate from the bathtub, which is helpful when bathing young children. These rooms offer floor bedding instead of the beds in the Western-style categories.
For up to six guests, the 80-square-meter Deluxe Bunk Room has two semi-double beds and two sets of bunks. Separate living and sleeping areas give the group somewhere to gather as well as individual beds. A 40-square-meter accessible room is also available, with step-free flooring and grab rails in the bathroom.
Facilities
The tenth-floor shared baths are reserved for overnight guests, with separate men's and women's areas and views across the surrounding mountains. They aren't hot-spring baths. Hours are 3 p.m. to midnight and 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., leaving time for a soak after sightseeing or before breakfast.
Welcome cake is served in the second-floor guest lounge on check-in day from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with last entry at 6:15 p.m. Chateraise ice cream is available to staying guests in the second-floor lobby and in the lobby beside the baths.
Coin laundry on the seventh and ninth floors helps during a longer trip, and shared microwaves are available on the guest floors. The front desk can store luggage. Paid underground parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis; drivers with tall vehicles should check the height limit before arriving.
Dining
The tenth-floor restaurant serves a breakfast buffet featuring local ingredients and Chateraise sweets. Breakfast is limited to staying guests and begins at 7 a.m., with last entry at 9 a.m. and service ending at 9:30 a.m. If you've booked an early train, compare its departure time with the breakfast hours before choosing a meal-inclusive rate.
The lunch buffet has savory dishes alongside desserts. It runs in two sittings, and reservations take priority. Downstairs, YATSUDOKI CAFE serves cakes and coffee, plus pasta and burgers at lunchtime. The adjoining Chateraise shop sells takeaway sweets, including gift boxes. Because the cafe closes at 5 p.m., it's a daytime option rather than somewhere to plan dinner.
Location and transport
Nagano Station has direct Hokuriku Shinkansen services from Tokyo and Kanazawa, while the Shinano limited express connects the city with Nagoya. Use the East Exit when walking to the hotel. There is no direct indoor connection, so allow for the street-level walk when carrying luggage.
The exit matters for sightseeing buses. Services toward the Snow Monkey Park bus stop depart from the East Exit, on the same side of the station as the hotel. A walk is still required from that stop to the park. For Zenkoji Temple, use bus stop 1 outside the opposite Zenkoji Exit, ride to Zenkoji Daimon, and continue on foot to the main hall.
Why stay here
Families and groups can share one room here without giving up a short walk to the Shinkansen. For a longer stay, laundry and shared microwaves also help between day trips.
Zenkoji Temple is about a 30-minute walk from the station if you'd rather explore on foot. Its Nakamise approach is lined with shops selling local crafts and souvenirs, as well as filled dumplings and other snacks.
