Overview

JR Inn Hakodate is a straightforward choice if you are arriving by rail or want the morning market close at hand. The hotel is located beside Hakodate Station at the North Exit, with Hakodate Morning Market in front of the property and about a one-minute walk from the JR terminal. Opened in May 2020, it is entirely non-smoking and places more emphasis on sleep and easy city travel than on resort-style facilities. For a short Hakodate stay, the standout comforts are the top-floor public bath, the view lounge, and a breakfast built around local seafood.

Rooms

Room categories range from 16-square-meter singles and 20-square-meter standard twins to larger options of up to 34 square meters. Singles have 140 cm beds, standard twins have 110 cm beds, and concept rooms have 120 cm beds. Concept rooms and large twin rooms can accommodate up to three guests, while premier twins can take up to four. A universal room is available on request.

Free Wi-Fi and wired LAN are included, although very heavy data use may be limited. The hotel's sleep focus comes through in the Simmons mattresses and the pillow corner, which offers 12 pillow types.

Facilities

The 12th-floor public bath is free for overnight guests, with separate men's and women's areas and an open-air tub. It is open from 3:00 PM to 1:00 AM and from 5:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Guests enter with their room key and use towels from the guest room. Views over the port town and railway tracks give the bath a distinctly Hakodate feel.

Nearby, JR Inn Lounge looks toward Mount Hakodate, serves complimentary coffee, and has a collection of more than 500 books. The lounge is open from 3:00 PM to 1:00 AM and from 5:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Coin laundry is on the second floor, with five machines and automatic detergent dispensing. Laundry and dry-cleaning service may also be available through the front desk.

Guest parking costs 600 yen per night and is available from 2:00 PM to noon the following day. Vehicles must be no more than 2.1 m high, 5.0 m long, and 1.8 m wide; larger vehicles require separate arrangements.

Dining

Breakfast is served at Marukatsu Suisan, a local seafood restaurant run by a long-established fresh fish store. The meal focuses on fresh seafood from Hakodate and nearby market sources, making breakfast a more notable part of the stay than dinner at the property. It costs 2,600 yen for guests of elementary school age and older and is served from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM, with last entry at 9:30 AM.

The hotel does not operate a dinner restaurant, but the front desk can suggest nearby places to eat.

Location and transport

From the JR ticket gate, turn right and stay in the indoor passage rather than leaving by the West Exit. Continue through the doors toward the hotel, passing restrooms and vending machines along the way. The indoor connection is especially convenient with luggage, since you can reach your room without transferring to a tram.

JR trains from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto take about 20 to 25 minutes, with Hakodate Liner services timed around Shinkansen connections. From Sapporo, limited express trips take roughly 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours. City trams are the main way to reach many sightseeing areas, with frequent daytime service toward Motomachi, the Bay Area, and Goryokaku. The bus information kiosk in front of Hakodate Station can help with routes, times, and fares.

For Mount Hakodate, options from the JR area include the seasonal climbing bus, the ropeway shuttle bus to the base station, or the tram to Jujigai followed by about a ten-minute uphill walk. Goryokaku Tower is reached by tram to Goryokaku-koen-mae and then about a 13-minute walk. Onuma Quasi-National Park is about 30 minutes away by limited express from JR Hakodate Station, followed by a five-minute walk from Onuma Koen Station.

Airport access

Hakodate Airport is about 20 minutes away by local bus. Airport city shuttle buses also operate, so match the current stop, fare, and schedule to your flight time.

Why stay here

Choose JR Inn Hakodate if you want rail travel to be simple, an early seafood breakfast near the market, and a bath with a view before or after sightseeing. It works especially well for travelers coming from Tokyo by Shinkansen and Hakodate Liner, as well as anyone who wants to visit the morning market without adding extra travel time.

The tradeoff is that this is a compact city hotel rather than a full-service resort. Room size depends heavily on category, dinner is handled outside the property, and the main shared comforts are the bath and lounge.

Good to know

Check-in starts at 3:00 PM, and check-out is until 10:00 AM. The hotel can hold luggage on your check-in and check-out days, but valuables, fragile items, and refrigerated or frozen goods should be handled separately.

Early check-in may be available from noon for 1,000 yen per hour, subject to room availability. Late check-out may be possible until noon at the same hourly rate. Payment is taken at check-in; cash, credit cards, and some electronic money are accepted. Gift cards and debit cards are not accepted.

Children up to age 6 can share a room with an adult free of charge, while children age 7 and older are charged at the adult rate. Pets are not allowed, except seeing eye dogs and service dogs. Guest-room phones cannot make outside calls; a first-floor public phone is available for domestic calls within its service limits. Guests are asked not to bring outside food or drinks into the 12th-floor lounge.
