Overview
Staying at Hotel Monterey Himeji lets you visit the castle without squeezing the entire stop between two trains. The hotel connects directly to Himeji Station, and Himeji Castle is about a 15- to 20-minute walk away. You can continue along the Sanyo Shinkansen route the next day, with time for the castle and neighboring Koko-en Garden in between.
The interiors blend Belgian Art Deco influences with Japanese details, a reference to Himeji's sister-city relationship with Charleroi. A guest-only bath and an Italian restaurant provide places to unwind after sightseeing.
Rooms
Twin and Queen Double rooms both measure 22 square meters. The main choice is between two 120-centimeter-wide beds and one 180-centimeter-wide bed rather than a difference in floor space. The Twin's arrow-feather wallpaper is one of the Japanese motifs worked into the Art Deco design.
A Triple adds an extra bed to the same 22-square-meter layout, so three adults will have less room for luggage. Families or friends wanting more space can consider the 44-square-meter Japanese-style room, which accommodates up to four adults. Larger luxury rooms and suites are also available. All guest rooms are non-smoking.
Facilities
Trinite, the shared bath and sauna area on the fourth floor, is free for overnight guests. The men's side has a dry sauna, while the women's side has a steam sauna. Opening hours are 5pm to 11pm and 6am to 9am, leaving time for a soak after a day at the castle or before breakfast.
Bring towels from your room. Guests with tattoos cannot use the baths, and children who still wear diapers aren't admitted. These restrictions are worth considering if bathing is a main reason for booking.
The fourth floor also has paid washing machines and dryers available around the clock. Reception is on the third floor, with check-in from 3pm and check-out by 11am. Paid parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Dining
San Michele, the third-floor Italian restaurant, has an open kitchen and a pizza oven. It provides a sit-down meal inside the hotel when you don't want to head out again after sightseeing.
A separate Japanese and Western breakfast buffet runs from 6:30am to 10am, with last orders at 9:30am. Local dishes include Himeji oden, simmered ingredients eaten with ginger soy sauce, and almond-butter toast. The cooking station rotates through items such as eggs and waffles. There's enough regional food to sample Himeji flavors during a short stay, alongside familiar breakfast choices.
Location and transport
The station connection is especially helpful for an overnight stop between Kansai and destinations farther west. Sanyo Shinkansen services link Himeji with Shin-Osaka, Shin-Kobe, and Okayama, while conventional JR trains provide another option for trips toward Kobe and Osaka. The better choice depends on your ticket or rail pass and how much time you have.
For the castle, head north from the station along Otemae Street. The route is roughly a kilometer and leads toward the castle's white keep. Allow about 15 to 20 minutes for the walk, with additional time to explore the grounds and castle interior.
Airport access
Direct airport buses connect Himeji Station with both Itami Airport and Kansai International Airport. The hotel is about a two-minute walk from the airport-bus stop. The trip to Itami takes around 80 minutes, while services to Kansai Airport Terminal 1 take roughly two hours and five minutes to two hours and twenty minutes.
The buses avoid train changes, but departures are spread out. Match the timetable to your flight before choosing this route, reserve ahead for the Kansai Airport service, and allow extra time for traffic.
Why stay here
You can spend the afternoon sightseeing, use the baths in the evening, and leave after breakfast. The laundry makes this a useful place to catch up on washing midway through a longer journey around Japan.
Koko-en adds a second visit beside the castle. Its nine enclosed gardens have different layouts, with ponds and paths to explore. Otemae Street links the castle area with the station, so both sights can be visited together without arranging a taxi or changing local trains.
Good to know
Nighttime work on Himeji Station's platform roofs may be audible inside the hotel during October 2–17 and November 6–18, 2026. Work is scheduled on weekdays from 11pm to 5am, and the dates may change. If you're booking during those periods and are sensitive to noise, ask the hotel for the latest schedule before committing.
